Don’t be a Go Getter! Be a Go Giver!
From “The Go Giver” Book by Bob Burg & John David Mann
This has to be one of the BEST books I have read about how GIVERS really succeed in Life and Business. I think this is a MUST read for all BNI Members. This is completely in sync with the GIVERS GAIN philosophy of BNI. I would say that this is an applied guide to GIVERS GAIN.
It’s small and easy to read book written in a story format much like “Who moved my cheese” or “The One minute Manager” . These are some of the key points from the book.
5 Laws of Stratospheric Success
1.The Law of Value
Your true value I determined by how much MORE you give in value than you take in payment.
The key is that our product/ service must serve people - it must add value. Exceed people’s expectations and they will pay you even more. The point isn’t to have them pay you more, it’s to give them more. You give, give, give. Why? Because you love to. It’s not a strategy. It’s a way of life!
All great fortunes in the world are made by men and women who had a greater passion for what they were giving- their product, service, idea- than what they were getting.
2.The Law of Compensation
Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.
Your compensation is directly proportional to how many lives you touch. There are two amazing things about this law:
(i) It means you get to determine your compensation level. If you want more success, find a way to serve more people. It’s as simple as that.
(ii) It means that there are no limitations on what you can earn, because you can always find more people to serve. Everybody can be successful because anybody can give.
3. The Law of Influence
Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interest first.
Because if you place the others persons interest first you will always be taken care of. Some people call it enlightened self interest. IF you asked most people what creates influence, they would say Money. Position. Maybe a history of outstanding accomplishments - but they are wrong! They have it backwards! Those things don’t create them influence - influence creates them.
Make your win about the other person, go after what he wants. Forget win-win- focus on the other person’s win.
Givers attract. They love to give. That’s why they are attractive and that’s what makes them influential.
4. The Law of Authenticity
The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
Reaching any goal takes 10% specific knowledge or technical skills. The other 90% is people skills. And what’s the foundation of all people skills? It’s being YOU. It starts with you. AS long as you are trying to be someone else, or putting on some act or behaviour someone else taught you, you have no possibility of truly reaching people. The most valuable thing you have to give people is yourself. No matter what you think you are selling, what you are really offering is you.
You want people skills? Then be a person. It’s called authenticity!
So you want to be successful? Then start by giving people the real YOU.
5. The Law of Receptivity
The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.
Receiving is the natural result of giving. If you give and then you try to stop the receiving that comes back, you’re like a person watching the tide roll out and commanding it not to come back in. It has to come back in, just as your heart has to contract after relaxing.
It’s not better to give than to receive. It’s insane to try to give and not receive.
Every giving can happen only because it is also a receiving ….
All the giving in the world won’t bring success, won’t create the results you want, unless you also make yourself willing and able to receive in like measure. Because if you don’t let yourself receive, you’re refusing the gifts of others - and you shut down the flow!
I want you to everyday practice one law. Before you go to sleep make sure that in some way you have applied this in your daily life.
Practice this in your life on a daily basis and watch your business succeed like never before! J

Dear Niiraj,
Thanks so much for this lovely post! We are honored.
I would add one thought: Bob often says, “The opposite of a go-giver is not a go-getter, but a go-taker.” I’m thinking, perhaps it’s possible to be BOTH a go-giver AND a go-getter!
Hey, maybe that thought will inspire another great post from you!
Warm regards,
John
Dear Niraj,
I enjoyed reading your post on “The Go Giver” book. The thoughts expressed are like true pearls of wisdom.
Also, I would like to buy the book…are they available in book shops in Mumbai ?
After joining BNI , I have started applying Giver’s Gain philosophy in my day to day life….I am really experiencing tremendous satisfaction…some things which Money just can’t buy….
God Bless.
